<image:title>Resilience Week - Resilience of Diversity</image:title>
<image:caption>“Resilience of Diversity brought together student artists from MECA, alumni, faculty and members of the community to broaden the narrative of artists of color. In sharing the intimate pockets of the emotional, physical, mental, and spiritual mind of these artists, we invite you to look beyond any preconceived ideas to explore the nuances of our stories, our work, and our experiences. As makers, as humans, as a family, we share ourselves with you to expand the conversation beyond stereotypes and ignorance. We showcase the beauty and resilience of diversity while critiquing the Western art historical canon that perpetuates racist, sexist, and exclusionary pedagogy throughout art institutions. Together, the participating artists showcase the beauty of intersectionality, vulnerability and their own cultural traditions to tell the story of community, identity, resistance, and justice.” - Ashley Page and Alejandra Cuadra</image:caption>

<image:title>Resilience Week - Mend The Gap: A Community Blanket</image:title>
<image:caption>Mend the Gap is an all ages inclusive workshop that worked with parents and children to discuss topics of race and equity over craft projects. Inspired by the Gee’s Bend Quilting Collective, participants made quilt squares out of upcycled textile material. The individual squares were sewn together to create a blanket representative of our vibrant and creative community. Focused on collective healing through the act of patching, mending, and upcycling textiles to generate conversation surrounding the topics of diversity, representation and inclusivity through art making. The final blanket was included in the Resilience of Diversity exhibition at Maine College of Art.</image:caption>

<image:title>Resilience Week - POC Led Workshop & Lecture Series</image:title>
<image:caption>A large part of Resilience Week was to engage our community in a dialogue about race, equity, representation. Hosted events were free and open to the public, as we aimed to engage with every level of our community. Providing the MECA student body, and general Maine community with opportunities for growth, learning, and understanding was deeply important in the development stage. To experience and celebrate our cultural difference, and opening our hearts to exchange and conversation, we work to break down the imaginary barriers between us. Programing included West African Dance Workshop with Athena Lynch, artist lecture by portrait photographer Sean Alonzo Harris, Embody the Vessel crochet workshop with Ashley Page, Black Poets Speak Out Talk with Amanda Johnston, History of Hair braiding workshop with Kris Patridge, 7 Ways Non-Black People of Color Perpetuate Anti-Blackness by Pulmira Muniz, Cultural Identity Contemplations with Roland Bryan Mendiola, and a Freestyle Friday with Marco and Mimi of SignatureSoul.</image:caption>

<image:title>Resilience Week - The Welcoming and Belonging Meal</image:title>
<image:caption>In partnership with the Cafe at MECA, members of the Students of Color Coalition provided a free meal to the students, faculty, and staff at the college. At the heart of community lies dialogue and generosity centered around meals that feed the souls and bodies. Within the celebration of the Resiliency of Diversity, we wanted to have the opportunity to sit down, slow down and be mindful of space, people and energy. We asked the question: What does it mean to enjoy a meal together within the community that we are all a part of? This meal was meant to be a space to step outside of comfort zones, in order to open the hearts, minds, ears and stomachs of our community.</image:caption>

<image:title>Resilience Week - A point of reflection</image:title>
<image:caption>As a member of the core planning group, we wish to acknowledge that this particular series of programming is a response to our student experiences here at MECA, and is in no way a comprehensive scope of diversity and resiliency. This week also included a Crit/Brunch where students of color were invited to show their work and get the perspective of other artists of color, as well an an LGBTQ+ BIPOC film festival called Navigating the Intersection. Hosted and moderated by Ashley Page, this festival was meant to broaden the narrative of queer people of color, and illuminate the multifaceted nature of identity. With curated reading lists, community meals, dance parties, live performances, and exhibitions, we have danced, sang, drummed, ate, watched and learned the different ways to be together. This is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of what representation, diversity and inclusion can be and look like. We ask that you extend these conversations and ideas well into your life, and take away a sense of connectivity and understanding.</image:caption>

<image:title>SPLAY - Splay is…</image:title>
<image:caption>Everything and is nothing, tangled, intertwined, rewoven, spread out in non-conforming ways. It’s exhausting to be twisted, turned, ravaged, and spit out by the institutions, expected norms, and the social constructs that bind us. Within this exhibition, artists take what has been splayed, stripped, and extracted to mend and reconstruct a new vision of themselves and each other. We disassemble the harsh, psychological landscape to envision fresh possibilities for a new way of being, reformed in collaborative spirit and solidarity. In the year of 2020, we experienced the continuity of harsh psychological realisms play over and over in empty studios. We’ve perceived elation as the ultimate form of exhaustion, but we ask: How do we obtain a balance between euphoria and depletion? SPLAY includes artists whose work we knew deeply because it comes from the same axis and base. The work inclines to meet you, whether oblique or straightforward, and always slightly devious, fun and underhanded. We will not use your right angles, rather we will meet your gaze knowing that to SPLAY is to be more at display, extra, and fully inserted in this world. - Kelly McConnell and Ashley Page</image:caption>

<image:title>Viewfinder - Viewfinder</image:title>
<image:caption>Curated by artists Ashley Page and Meg Hahn, each selected artist draws inspiration from our constructed world, natural environment, and social structures by transmuting their daily experiences into playful new perspectives. Through various creative processes that include painting, sculpture, photography, and interdisciplinary practices, these artists use the mundane human experience as a point of departure, to create work that displays optimistic truths and transportive new worlds. Viewfinder is an invitation to step into the creative process and experience the world through the artists’ lens that merges worlds, identities, cultures, environments, truths, and more. The hope is for viewers to leave with a renewed sense of what is possible. On view: July 28th - September 23, 2023 at the Portland Public Library Lewis Gallery in Portland, ME. <image:caption>Long-time friends and collaborators, Ashley Page and Alejandra Cuadra Sanchez weave together their individual discoveries to create a space where their conversations come to life. As interdisciplinary artists they explore materiality into a symphony of sensibility, femininity, and liberty. Working in dual paths of material exploration and transformation, Cuadra and Page embody a personal approach to storytelling in order to give agency and visibility to underrepresented communities.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Mother. Your salt composition matches my own and I laugh at our similarities. You and I are no different, you see. I am you, and you are me The push and pull, this give and receive, I wonder if you know how much you mean to me Your healing waters meet my own and the sound of your song lulls me to sleep As your vessel shelters my own How do I learn to listen to all the mysteries that you hold How do I learn to give back to you beyond what you give to me? So vast, so deep in your glory You shelter me, you give me warmth In times of need In times of joy A home of warmth and a voice of wisdom It washes away all that doesn’t serve me A siren song An invitation A revelation I walk in the footsteps and inhale the whispers of those known and unknown to me I formed this vessel out of mud, water, and clay and thus I am multiple layers. Rooted within the veins of memory The waves sing the songs of the living and the hymns of the dead I ask for their wisdom, their stead They tell me I am a choir And they tell me to look ahead By Alejandra Sanchez Cuadra and Ashley Page</image:caption>

<image:title>Kindred Futures: Through Our Eyes - Kindred Futures: Though Our Eyes</image:title>
<image:caption>On view at the Clifford Gallery at Waterfall Arts, Kindred Futures: Through Our Eyes features works in sculpture, video, and digital collage by four Maine-based artists: Ashley Page, Eli Kao, Lokotah Sanborn, and Shane Charles. Exploring themes of language, land, environment, and memory through embodied experience and site-based processes, Kindred Futures: Through Our Eyes presents the artists’ explorations into creative placemaking. Layers of time are sifted through layers of making, allowing the invisible to emerge into view. This exhibition invites viewers to see the world through the artists’ eyes, and envision a kindred future. The conversation generated between the artists’ works reckons with historical and present harm, while inviting visitors to imagine spaces of solidarity moving forward. Co-curated by Ashley Page and Eli Kao. [image on the left: Ashley Page, Haunted Hives, paper pulp, wire, hair, shells, beads, string, 2024. Photo credit: Eli Kao]</image:caption>

Serving as a departure from a traditional woven basket I am interested in what these objects could look like, instead of what they should look like.</image:caption>

<image:caption>These works were created at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts during a Papermaking workshop taught by Krista Franklin. These collaged paper pieces incorporates foraged plants, preserved ephemera, and images sourced from an encyclopedia of African culture and ritual. By merging the stories of people, crops, and seeds that traveled the middle passage, this series explores the reverberating history of the African Diaspora.</image:caption>

<image:caption>An exploration into native African plant species and natural resources, this piece serves as a way to unpack the ways in which global trade/economic exploitation has impacted the natural agriculture of the African continent. In my research, I'm tracing the way these plants have a diaspora of their own that mirror that of the African people. The form is inspired by basketry forms, and the idea of the body as a vessel, and the possibilities of what it carries.</image:caption>

<image:title>Artworks - In Memory of Those Taken - In Memory of Those Taken (2020)</image:title>
<image:caption>In Memory of Those Taken was a project borne out of the need to honor the lives of black individuals whose lives have been taken as a result of police brutality, or racially motivated attacks. The ghostly blue images on the banners come from a series of cyanotype prints that I created in response to the recent loss of George Floyd to police brutality. Having first handedly witnessed my home of Minneapolis, Minnesota erupt in an uproar of social justice, with the rest of the world standing up in solidarity, I felt compelled to add my voice to the chorus. The design uses gathered flowers, and found images sourced from news outlets, as this project was born out the need to make a statement. I have listed the names of black figures whose lives have been unjustly murdered under the guise of white supremacy. I refuse to allow the faces of individuals such as George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and the unfortunate others to go forgotten.</image:caption>

<image:title>Artworks - In Memory of Those Taken</image:title>
<image:caption>These banners exist as a way to remember the lives they had, and as a way to collectively mourn the future they lost. By presenting these individuals in a field of flowers, I actively reject the narratives that corporate news outlets and social media employ to tarnish their images. This work speaks directly to the reality that black people face in America. That on any given day, it could be you on the news. So with this project, you will know their faces. You will know their names. I wish to present these images of the departed here in the park, and bring their stories back to life to pay respect and homage to lives cut far too short. In Memory of Those Taken, serves as a reminder that black lives more than just matter. They are incredibly valuable and will be deeply missed.</image:caption>

<image:title>Artworks - Fallen Blooms - Fallen Blooms (2020)</image:title>
<image:caption>Fallen Blooms, is a collaboration between Portland based artists Rachel Gloria Adams and Ashley Page. Rachel’s floral design work flourishes along the wall, while Ashley’s cyanotypes emerge throughout the design. Rachel’s floral shapes draw inspiration from African, folkloric and Scandinavian textiles. Rachel uses floral motifs to connect and entangle the portraits -these humans most likely never crossed paths but their fate connects them.</image:caption>

<image:title>Artworks - Fallen Blooms - The cyanotypes are a part of an ongoing wheatpasting project that Ashley created in response to the death of George Floyd, titled In Memory of Those Taken. Initiated in Minneapolis, Minnesota where Ashley witnessed her home town erupt in social solidarity, the posters have migrated to Portland in order to continue this conversation. These prints were created to honor the lives of African American’s that have been cut short due to racially motivated violence. This work speaks directly to the reality that black people face in America, that on any given day, it could be you on the news. So with this project, we present the lives of the dearly departed in a bed of flowers to pay homage to their beauty and remember the life they led with grace and excellence.</image:title>

<image:title>Artworks - Pupa State - Pupa State (2020)</image:title>
<image:caption>Pupa State, uses basketry and fiber-manipulation techniques to create sculptures reminiscent of bodily forms and various lifecycles. A “pupa” is the life stage of some insects undergoing transformation between immature and mature stages. These crocheted sculptures are reflective of this lifecycle and explore the ways in which the human body mirrors other bodies found in nature. In Pupa State, I am weaving together voices, stories, memories, and materials that rediscovers truths and redefines narratives about the Black female body.</image:caption>

<image:title>Artworks - Cast Your Net - Cast Your Net (2023)</image:title>
<image:caption>A net carries many meanings. As a textile structure made up of knotted thread and tension, they are traditionally used as a vessel for fishing, hunting, and/or creating enclosures. In its most basic form, a net is a form in which something is held, captured, carried in and/or enclosed. Whether it is holding someone’s catch of the day, goods from the local market, or providing a comfortable bed in the form of a hammock, the diamond pattern net permeates our day to day life. This project, Cast Your Net, is an ode to the net, and the various roles it plays.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Interdisciplinary artist Ashley Page has partnered with the Tate House Museum for the 2024 iteration of SPACE’s Re-Site project. Reconciling Portland, Maine’s history of industrialization and colonization while contending with the global reverberations of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade, Imagining Freedom, asks the viewer to step into the shoes of an enslaved Black individual, Bet. Her age, appearance, homelands, and quality of life are all unknown, lost to the unraveling nature of time. Only appearing as a called witness in a court record, we know nothing about Bet other than she was an enslaved servant living and working in the Tate House in the 1700s for an unknown amount of time.</image:caption>

Wind — an outside force — carries seeds and their pods to hitherto unknown locales, yet they take root and thrive wherever they land. They are armored but porous, allowing in what is needed to grow while retaining protective exteriors that permit becoming.” - Kat Zagaria Buckley, Director of Art Exhibitions and Outreach at University Southern Maine Art Gallery, in Life Forms: Grow curatorial essay</image:caption>

<image:caption>“These allusions to the resilience and malleability of life and identity are underscored in the four portals which offer alternate realities and futures. Against a painted black backdrop, the artist’s doorways draw images from various sources, including Page’s personal life and the recent Los Angeles fires. The portals are punctuated by environmental thresholds of coal, rocks, driftwood, shells, and sand. These gateways provide a choice of where to take root. They remind us that no matter where seeds land, growth will be their inevitable constant.” - Kat Zagaria Buckley, Director of Art Exhibitions and Outreach at University Southern Maine Art Gallery, in Life Forms: Grow curatorial essay</image:caption>

<image:caption>Created during a studio-residency at Women’s Studio Workshop, these handmade paper works merge time, space and possibility.
